Santa Anita: Two straight for Maryfield

Maryfield won her second straight race since being claimed by trainer Doug O'Neill when she captured the $80,605 Flower Girl Handicap at Santa Anita.

The Flower Girl, a sprint for older fillies and mares, was a supporting feature to the San Felipe Handicap, which was run later in the day.

Maryfield ($9.60) let the speedy Mazella lead through an opening quarter-mile in 21.51 seconds, but then moved up to engage Mazella through a half-mile in 43.90 seconds. Maryfield began to pull clear on the turn, and no one else made an impact. At the wire, Maryfield and jockey Victor Espinoza were 5 1/4 lengths clear of favored Freakin Streakin, with Wild Storm third and Mazella fading to finish last in the four-horse field.

Eight horses were entered in the Flower Girl, but the field was cut in half when Heavenly Humor, Lock and Key, Starkay, and Tivadare were scratched after the race was moved from the turf to the main track because of rain on Friday.

Maryfield covered 6 1/2 furlongs on a fast main track in 1:15.09.

Maryfield made her first 10 starts at Woodbine and was brought here this winter by trainer Josie Carroll. In her first start on this circuit on Jan. 16, O'Neill claimed her for $50,000. She then won a $40,000 claimer on Feb. 19.
