Vernon Underwood winner Smiling Tiger will miss the Palos Verdes.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Smiling Tiger, the winner of the Grade 3 Vernon Underwood Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park in December in his most recent start, is out of training because of a bruised foot, trainer Jeff Bonde said.

The minor injury will prevent Smiling Tiger from starting in the $150,000 Palos Verdes Stakes over six furlongs on Saturday, and has left his chances of a trip to Dubai for the $2 million Golden Shaheen in March as “questionable,” Bonde said.

Smiling Tiger has not worked since mid-December.

“I’m giving him a month off,” Bonde said.

Owned by Alan Klein and Phil Lebherz, Smiling Tiger was third in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita in November. A 6-year-old horse, Smiling Tiger has won 9 of 23 starts and $1,480,704.

The Grade 2 Palos Verdes has 10 nominations, which include Private Zone, the runner-up in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes here on Dec. 26, and The Lumber Guy, Justin Phillip and Fast Bullet, who were second, fifth and sixth in the BC Sprint.

The Lumber Guy was seventh as the 4-5 favorite in the Malibu here on Dec. 26.
