Santa Anita: Robert Lewis, San Antonio to have compact fields

Benoit & Associates
Chitu (above) will put his unbeaten record on the line against Bob Baffert stablemate Midnight Hawk in the Robert Lewis on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - There are two stakes on dirt at Santa Anita on Saturday – the $300,000 San Antonio Stakes for older horses over 1 1/8 miles and the $200,000 Robert Lewis Stakes for 3-year-olds over 1 1/16 miles. Both will have small fields.

The San Antonio Stakes is expected to be led by 13-time stakes winner Game On Dude, who was second to 2013 champion 3-year-old male Will Take Charge in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs on Nov. 29.

The Grade 2 San Antonio has a projected field of seven, including American Blend, Blingo, Blueskiesnrainbows, Imperative, Majestic Harbor, and Willyconker.

The Grade 2 Lewis Stakes is likely to be led by Midnight Hawk, the unbeaten winner of the Grade 3 Sham Stakes over a mile here on Jan. 11.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Midnight Hawk will probably have six rivals – Candy Boy, Chitu, Cool Samurai, Diamond Bachelor, El Nino Terrible, and Home Run Kitten.

Baffert trains Chitu, who is unbeaten in two starts, a maiden race and an optional claimer in December.

The horse population just isn't existent in SoCal anymore. It's been tough to fill mid level claiming races, so we only imagine how much more difficult it is to fill higher class races. Best of luck to the racing office at SA.

I'm completely shocked - a small field of runners at Santa Anita in a graded stakes race? Surely you jest!!

3 Graded stakes and 1 drew a field of 14. A super competitive Robert B. Lewis with Candy Boy, Midnight Hawk, Diamond Bachelor and Chitu and well um...Blueskiesandrainbows and Game on Dude.

Blueskiesandrainbows is in career form, but he just doesn't have the same cruising speed as Game On Dude. Looks like another walk-over. Too bad Miller raced Appealing Tale last week, because I would have taken a shot with him. He's been freaky since gelded.
