Richard’s Kid, who finished third in the $1 million Pacific Classic on Aug. 26, will start in Saturday’s $250,000 Awesome Again Stakes, a key prep for the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 3.
Richard’s Kid will be racing for trainer Doug O’Neill, who will return to training Friday after serving a 40-day suspension for a 2010 medication violation. The suspension ends Thursday, allowing O’Neill to resume normal activity Friday.
In August, Richard’s Kid was sold to a partnership led by Triple B Farms. The Pacific Classic was his first start for the new partners.
A 7-year-old, Richard’s Kid has not raced at Santa Anita since a win in the Grade 2 San Antonio Handicap in 2010. At the time, Santa Anita had a synthetic track. The track has since replaced that surface with a dirt track.
The Awesome Again Stakes, run over 1 1/8 miles, is led by Game On Dude, winner of the Hollywood Gold Cup and runner-up in the Pacific Classic. Bob Baffert trains Game On Dude and is the former trainer of Richard’s Kid.
Steve, just a point of order: Doug O'Neill did not serve a suspension for a "medication violation". He served a suspension as the "trainer of record" because a horse in his care had a higher than allowed level of TCO2. He was cleared of medication violations and for any action of intentionally causing these higher than allowed readings. The ruling brought out that these readings could have been caused by natural and legal substances, including the horse's food, lasix, etc.

MOST HAPPY FELLA, reclaimed from last, drops to easier spot after setting pressured pace vs. odds-on Pinball; both wins last year came on this track. ARTIE LUVSTO PARTY has a knack for surprises, with three lifetime wins coming at 33-1, 17-1 & 11-1 (two on this track); entrymate EQUIVOCATION gets major rider switch first off a claim. PURE ATTITUDE among top 3 in wins & earnings and snug fit to date clause.
