Santa Anita renovating turf club, grandstand

Santa Anita is planning renovations to its turf club, grandstand and stable area during the second half of the summer, track president George Haines said on Thursday.

The renovations will be conducted concurrent with the Del Mar race meeting, from July 17 to Sept. 4. Areas of the turf club will be refurbished and expanded, and the Chandelier room in the interior of the turf club will be remodeled. The track will be closed while the work is being conducted.

“The whole turf club will be renovated,” Haines said.

In the last decade, the turf club area has seen light crowds on some racing days, losing customers to the glass-enclosed Frontrunner Restaurant, which was built in 1999 and overlooks the track. Haines said the turf club renovation will give that area “a shot in the arm.”

In the grandstand, the interior of the mezzanine level will undergo a renovation to the betting and bar areas, Haines said.

There are no major renovations planned for the barn area.

“We’ll get back there and have renovations to the road and general clean-up,” Haines said.

The stable area at Betfair Hollywood Park will remain open for training this summer as an alternative to Del Mar. This is the last year of racing and training at Hollywood Park. The track is scheduled to be demolished in 2014.

Santa Anita will host an autumn race meeting from Sept. 27 to Nov. 3 and will host the Breeders’ Cup on Nov. 1-2.
