Santa Anita: Purse redistribution in claiming race

ARCADIA, Calif. - Apply, a 5-year-old gelding who finished fifth in the fifth race Jan. 21 for $7,000 to $8,000 claimers, tested in excess of the permitted level of total carbon dioxide, according to a ruling published by Santa Anita stewards March 31.

Apply finished 12 1/2 lengths behind race winner Big Wags, but had a post-race test of total carbon dioxide of 39.55 millimoles per liter of plasma. The permitted level is 37 millimoles.

As a result of the positive test, Apply’s share of the $18,000 purse – $90 – is to be forfeited by owner Gary Kropp, the ruling stated. Apply actually earned $340, but $250 of that is a participation bonus paid to all runners in Southern California Thoroughbred races.

Apply is trained by Robertino Diodoro, who may face a fine or suspension because of the positive. He has yet to have a hearing before the stewards, according to the California Horse Racing Board.
