Santa Anita: Los Bomberos trying turf

ARCADIA, Calif. – Los Bomberos has won 2 of 3 starts since being claimed for just $12,500 at Hollywood Park last November.

Finding the right spots for the 4-year-old gelding can sometimes be tricky. Los Bomberos was entered in an optional claimer over six furlongs on dirt at Santa Anita on Monday, but was scratched by trainer Mark Glatt. Instead, Glatt opted to enter Los Bomberos in a similar race over about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course, Friday’s seventh race.

A winner of 4 of 11 starts and $60,200, Los Bomberos, 4, will make his turf debut on Friday.

“It was a tougher race on Monday,” Glatt said on Wednesday. “I had a chance to switch over and I thought I’d give it a try. It came up easier on paper. I don’t know if he’ll like grass or the hill.”

After watching the 5-year-old gelding Obsess win Monday’s race convincingly, Glatt hopes he has already made the right decision. “I don’t think I would have matched strides with Obsess,” he said.

After being claimed, Los Bomberos won an allowance race at Turf Paradise in December and a $20,000 claimer here on Jan. 2. Two weeks later, he finished seventh of eighth in an optional claimer over 6 1/2 furlongs.

Los Bomberos drew the rail on Friday and is part of a field of seven. Mike Smith rides Los Bamberos, who is likely to have the early lead. “My horse is pretty fast,” Glatt said.

The competition includes Starspangled Heat, a threat from off the pace; Earnednevergiven, who was sixth in the Cotton Fitzsimmons Mile at Turf Paradise on Jan. 12 and a two-time winner on the hillside; and Intuitive Nature, a maiden race winner on the hillside turf course last March.

Glatt has won with two of his first 29 starters at this meeting, and also has an excellent chance in Friday’s sixth race, an allowance race for fillies and mares over a mile, with the 4-year-old filly Heidi Maria.

Heidi Maria has one victory in 13 starts, a maiden race at Hollywood Park on Dec. 11. In her only subsequent start, she was third in an optional claimer over 1 1/16 miles here on Jan. 26.

Heidi Maria does not face a tough field. Screaming Regal, second in the Melair Stakes last year at Hollywood Park, is a threat from off the pace.
