The Factor, one of trainer Bob Baffert’s leading hopes for the Breeders’ Cup, zoomed seven furlongs in 1:22.20 at Santa Anita on Tuesday morning. Baffert said over the weekend that The Factor would be pre-entered for the BC Sprint and the BC Dirt Mile. The Hall of Fame trainer may have as many as 10 starters in the Breeders’ Cup.
Tuesday, Baffert also worked BC Juvenile Fillies hopeful Candrea six furlongs in 1:11.60, BC Juvenile contender Drill seven furlongs in 1:24, and the 3-year-old Prayer for Relief a half-mile in 46.60 seconds. Prayer for Relief is a candidate for the BC Classic.
Baffert plans to start Euroears in the BC Sprint, and that 7-year-old horse worked five furlongs in 56.60 seconds at Santa Anita on Monday, the fastest of 42 recorded works at the distance. Euroears was eighth in the Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 1 and set a six-furlong track record of 1:08.17 in the Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar on July 31.
The second-fastest clocking over five furlongs on Monday, at 58.60 seconds, was Game On Dude, who is bound for the BC Classic.
Best Bets
A 5-year-old maiden-claimer with a history of breaking slowly is the most probable winner on the Friday-night card. Yikes. However, THREE LITTLE BIRDS ran super in his comeback two weeks ago, and can win this maiden-20 with a better takeoff. Off slowly, he uncorked a big middle move, lost ground sweeping four-wide through the turn, challenged for the lead turning for home, and then flattened out to finish fourth. It was a big effort by a gelding that benefits from an additional half-furlong. With a clean break in his third career start, this is a race he should win.
