Santa Anita Derby contender Hear the Ghost turns in sharp six-furlong workout

Barbara D. Livingston
San Felipe winner Hear the Ghost remains on schedule for the April 5 Santa Anita Derby.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Hear the Ghost, the winner of the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on March 9, worked six furlongs in 1:13.60 at Betfair Hollywood Park on Sunday, continuing his preparation for the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on April 6.

“It looks like we’re right on schedule,” trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said. “He galloped out strongly.”

Hear the Ghost’s workout equaled the fifth fastest of 14 recorded works at the distance. Hear the Ghost worked alone in his second workout since his first career stakes win in the San Felipe. On March 17, Hear the Ghost breezed a half-mile in 50.80 seconds.

“He’s recovered strongly since his last race,” Hollendorfer said. “He’s kind of a laid-back horse and he does everything well. I hope he does everything we need him to do in the Santa Anita Derby.”

Co-owned by Hollendorfer and Ted Aroney’s Halo Farms, Hear the Ghost has won 2 of 3 starts and $222,400. The $300,000 San Felipe Stakes was his first start around two turns. The Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby is run over 1 1/8 miles.

Other probable starters for the Santa Anita Derby are the second through fourth-place finishers in the San Felipe - Flashback, Tiz a Minister, and Goldencents; and Summer Exclusive and Storm Fighter, the winners of maiden races on March 2.

WHATS WRONG WITH THE TRACK at SANTA ANITA? Yesterday, and the day before, it was sunny and warm, even had a nice breeze, but horse and jockeys were covered in mud, head to toe after dirt races ! Joe Talamo looked like he had run through a wall of mud when he came back after the 8th race ! Come on guys, big racing coming up, lets dry out this quagmire !

Baffert will be loaded in this race with Super99, Power Broker, Flashback. May look just like a San Felipe rematch with Flashback vs Hear The Ghost, but if Garret Gomez lays OFF the pace with Flashback, watch out. He'll have a little something left for the final 1/8 of a mile, and could hold off closers such as Hear The Ghost & Tiz A Minister. If you like Tiz A Minister, I recommend staying off him this time since you will not get any other rider to ride a horse like Gomez does. It's not going to happen. To me, the Santa Anita Derby will simply be a rematch between Flashback & Hear The Ghost, Flashback getting the nod this time, again, due to the jock change and switch of tactic. I honestly thought this horse was overrated before the San Felipe but it looks like to me he is still improving. Good luck guys.

As I mentioned after the San Felipe, Flashback will come off the pace in the Santa Anita Derby. Baffert mentioned that his horse learned so much in that race. I think you are right on about Flashback when you say watch out if he comes from off the pace. The betting public will probally make FB about 7/2 which will be a gift if you play him. People say he has distance limits, I say he can get the classic distance. Aaron , you are so right on about Flashback.....

Harrington Night trained by Vladimir Cerin deserves a shot in the Santa Anita Dery he has won twice at mile 1 1/16 by 8-10 lengths and against older horses in a starter allowance race the day after the San Felipe was rum

This horse is gonna go by Flashback at the 1/8th pole and win by a length or 2. Tapits's can't get this distance with competition in the race.

Tapit's cannot get 9 furlongs in top class competiton? They have won 2 turns going 8 to 10 furlongs from ages 2 upward. For example: Stardom Bound (SA Oaks) Hansen (8.5F BC Juvy) Tapitsfly (multiple 8.5F stx wnr) Joyful Victory (Santa Margarita G1) Careless Jewel (Alabama) Tapizar (Sham) Headache (Hawthorne Gold Cup) Zazu (8.5F Lady Secret G1) Concord Point (W. Vrginia Derby) Laragh (G1 8.5F Hol Starlet) Rattlesnake Bridge (8.5F Longbranch) Dance Card (G1 Gazelle) Hightap (Iowa Oaks) War Echo (FG Distaff 9F) Tapicat (FL Oaks) Normandy Invasion (nosed in Remsen) Diva Ash (G3 Edgewood 8.5F) etc. Tapit won at 9 furlongs (Wood) and is a grandson of AP Indy. His dam is a stakes winner out of Unbridled. Flashback will not lose because of 9 furlongs in competiton, he'll lose if he's not good enough.

Good job Scott - he should remain anonymous.

I think TIZ can be a good horse in the long run but he's not winning any derby anytime soon. That last race catered to the closers, I bet Krigger is off golden and Gomez s instructed to rate off the one dummy trainer who tells his jock to challenge the lead.

If these fleet footed steeds make it to November, it may well be the Breeder's Cup classic that's in dire danger of being a doozy!!

I also think Flashback will run BIG! It will be his best race yet!

Nobody will come close to Flashback in this S.A. Derby. Those horses can't hold his jock strap. HTG & Tiz had the race given to them, they didnt catch FLASHBACK, FLASH came back to them. Things will be different this time. Consider yourselves warned!

right on bro u got that right.very poor ride by Leperiuex great move by bob baffert to replace him with Gomez. Leperiuex was running down a horse like Goldencents who he can get by anytime

It"s great to see how things fold and unfold in racing. The real rider change should be on Goldencents who is a better horse than we all think. Put an anchor (Krigger) on anything and it will slow down. Julien, other than falling asleep in the last 1/16th schooled Krigger and his horse and O Neils camp knows that. Hopefully when the entries come out, Goldencents will have a rider switch., if so, play him and get paid.....

29 and 2/5ths to be exact. That's flat-out flying. And If you watch the way he took the final turn for home, he was 9 wide and leaning 45 degrees to his left. It's a wonder his legs didn't go flying out from under him. Garrett didn't exactly give him a very good ride.

I think Tiz a Minister is the winner. Did you see he made up 16 lengths from the 6 furlong and did the 5/16s in 29 seconds? Privately, I hope he runs a closing 3rd so his odds will be high in the derby.

Will 3rd get hin enough points to get in the Derby?

I thought he hung when he got close to the ghost ,point for the snow chief on gold rush day if connections are smart ,then worry only about Nina's dragon
