Santa Anita carryover at $214,729


ARCADIA, Calif. - The Santa Anita pick six will start with a carryover of $214,729 on Sunday after a string of longshots surprised bettors on Saturday.

Sunday's pick six covers the fourth through ninth races and includes two major stakes - the San Felipe Stakes for 3-year-olds and the Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap for older fillies and mares.

The pick six begins with a one-mile urf race for $45,000 to $50,00 claimers. In a field of eight, Badinage and Vamos Nina are leading contenders.

Action This Day, the champion 2-year-old male of 2003, will try to win his first race as a 3-year-old in the $250,000 San Felipe Stakes. He was fourth in the Sham Stakes on Feb. 8. Action This Day is the 5-2 second choice on the morning-line against 10 opponents. The morning-line favorite is St Averil, who won the Santa Catalina Stakes in January.

In the sixth race, Royal Robe and Exreme Machine have been scratched rom a six-furlong race for 4-year-old claimers. Excessive Hayate, who drew the outside, is the 2-1 favorite.

The largest field of the pick six is the seventh race, a starter allowance on the hillside turf course that has 12 entrants. In an open race, Sky Reality, Docket and Ringading are contenders.

Star Parade will be favored to win the Santa Margarita, run over 1 1-8 miles. She has won two consecutive stakes, but must beat Bare Necessities, who was a fast-closing second in the Santa Maria Handicap in mid-February.

The last race is a seven-furlong maiden claimer for California-breds. Drought Breaker, Beautifulbutbord and Reasonably Brite will attract support.
