Santa Anita: Bright Thought's San Luis Rey victory worth a world record

Benoit & Associates
Bright Thought ran 1 1/2 miles on turf in 2:22.72, a new world record.

ARCADIA, Calif. -- When Bright Thought ran 1 1/2 miles on turf in 2:22.72 when winning the San Luis Rey Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita, he set a world record, according to the American Racing Manual, which listed the 2:22.80 time set over this course by Hawkster in 1989 as the previous mark.

Bright Thought was awarded a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 104.

The first three furlongs of a 1 1/2-mile race at Santa Anita is run downhill.

Jorge Gutierrez, the trainer of Bright Thought,on Sunday morning said he would likely make his next start in the Grade 1, $500,000 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day, May 4.

I'm a little stunned by horse racing's inability to celebrate a very special moment. Other sports would be all over their new world record. But in horse racing it brings out the cynics. And how does this get a 104 Beyer? C'mon DRF.

Naysayers should probably consider that plenty of racetracks around the world are NOT flat, yet horses have set world records on them. Hilarious to suggest that SA's downhill slope has that strong a gravitational pull. I would think that's actually dangerous for the horses.

so lets see the BC been held at at SA how many times ?? So this horse sets a World Record and its not good because of a slope ! Come ON MAN ! Why cant it be ! WOW !!!! He set a World Record !!! instead of trying to take away what he did !!! Maybe Congrats to the owners !! Anonymous ! You could of had him for 25k !!! So all the records set at SA are invalid because of its design !! Records were made to be broken . BRIGHT THOUGHT broke this one ! Sorry ! hate sore losers winers etc ! So Anonymous if he was your horse would you surrender the track record !! I cant wait to he breaks another one and he will .I see this horse run in person he is the REAL DEAL !!!!

andrew beyer gave "BRIGHT THOUGHT" a 104beyer!!! guy is either crazy or on drugs they should remove his speedrating licence, easily 125/130

He invented the rating system. SA turf super fast this year. Claimers running 112s at 6 1/2 .Never the less a super perfomance

4 those who have doubt because it was downhill 4 the 1st 3f "BRIGHT THOUGHT" ran a 110&change 6f & 135mi!!(slow) in other words the real running started after the 1st mile & he exploded when switched 2 his right lead in midstretch, haven't seen explosion like that since miesque(1987) so that 222.72 was totally legit people u better recognize

Getting the first 3/8 mi. on a downslope is help that lasts the whole race. Less effort at the start means more at the end. It just doesn't wash. I wish someone would explain how the track can compare itself to other tracks. It seems ridiculous.

How about All Squared Away my Horse ran pretty well huh?

It can be world record. Or it can be a 104 Beyer. But it can't be both.

As others have noted, on this course there is a gravity assist for the first 3f. Asterisk time.

I love the course. Have seen mind-blowing races on it. I'm pretty sure that the Beyer would have been higher (poet, and know it), if it had been known this was a world record.

Its a record for turf not dirt

A 104 beyer for breaking the world record? So to get a 115 he'd have to break a 24 year old world record by a full second or more? That's probably not even possible.

Next time they're going to parachute him in so he can break another world record. Trying to say this record breaks Sectretariat's for 11/2 miles, or that "Hawkster" did in 1989, is absurd, given the downslope for the first 3/8 mile. What baloney.

I agree about Secretariat's record. Dirt and turf are not 'created equal.'

It's turf ding dong.

I remember from my bicycling days how going down even a slight slope made you go so much faster, why is there a race track like this and of what worth is this record? It's ridiculous. They could run only on the flat part if they could move the gate out of the way. This is super cheesey.

Sure, comparing records from different tracks can be like comparing apples to oranges. But he did get the track record, which is comparing apples to apples, and a track record ain't shabby.

A world record means it covers all tracks of all surfaces anywhere in the world. But I can't believe it can allow for the downslope of 3/8 mi. at the beginning. I wish someone would explain how this downslope is permitted and can be compared to flat tracks.
