Beholder, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2012 trained by Richard Mandella, will be pointed to the $250,000 Las Virgenes Stakes on March 2 after her surprising second to Renee’s Titan in Monday’s $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes over 6 1/2 furlongs.
Renee’s Titan ($43.80) closed more than five lengths in the final furlong to win the Grade 2 Santa Ynez Stakes by three-quarters of a length over Beholder, the 1-5 favorite who finished a nose in front of pacesetter Dawn’s Charm.
Renee’s Titan races for Zillah Reddam and trainer Doug O’Neill. The Santa Ynez was her first stakes win. She won even though jockey Tyler Baze lost his whip.
Beholder had not started since winning the BC Juvenile Fillies in November, a race that clinched her championship.
“It looks like she came up a little short on me,” Mandella said. “Maybe I should have added one more strong work.
“She came out fine and looks good. We’ll go on for the next one.”
She doesn't want 10, 9, or 8 furlongs in my opinion. She's a stone sprinter who hasn't learned to rate yet. I'll enjoy betting against her again at short odds in the Las Virgenes.

Anyone think he will put her against the boys in one of the Derby prep races to gain points and possibly enter her in the Derby?

Just a thought. Why would some one bet 1-5 when a person can get 20-1 on a Reddam-trainer O'Neill horse?

Like I said a couple of days ago,the "Big" Favorite gets beat, this Article is more about Beholder then about Renee,s Titan!!!!....The Jockey loses whip, then has to just use the reins to get the Job done!!!....then again the winning Trainer & Jockey aren't that well known at Sanat Anita!!

Thank God she has some class to her, she battled the length of the stretch and got her nose down for 2nd, I had the exacta and I appreciate the gutsy try in her !
I wouldnt bet my worst enemys money against her next time !

MONCLOVA galloped out strongly after closing belatedly in her second trip postward May 26, from which the runner-up exited to graduate with a 68 Beyer. The daughter of Queen's Plate winner Niigon is bred to run long, and can break through with the stretchout from six and a half furlongs to a mile and a sixteenth. BE MIND PHIL is returning on short rest off a closing second in her debut, going a mile around one turn on the grass. She has a blend of speed and stamina in her pedigree.
