ARCADIA, Calif. - Amazombie, the champion sprinter of 2011, worked six furlongs in 1:12.40 on Friday, moving closer to his 2012 debut in the $200,000 San Carlos Stakes over seven furlongs on Feb. 25.
Trainer Bill Spawr timed Amazombie in 1:12, with the first three furlongs in 36.60 seconds and final three furlongs in 35.40. “It looks good,” Spawr said. “We’re on course.”
The winner of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs in November in his last race, Amazombie was an intended starter in the $150,000 Palos Verdes Stakes here on Jan. 21, but wet weather that weekend led Spawr to scratch the 6-year-old gelding.
Best Bets
RON C led until deep stretch in his only 2011 appearance, in a maiden special route on the grass, which was won by future restricted stakes winner Crown's Path. He has a sprint prep under his girth on Polytrack, and could make all the running in this one-mile turf route, with the addition of Lasix. DR. HARKNESS is bred for the grass on both sides of his pedigree, and his trainer has solid numbers pertaining to this situation. DRINK OR SINK placed in both of his turf starts at Tampa during the winter, and could better this projected placing.
