ARCADIA, Calif. – The 2011 champion sprinter Amazombie will make his first start of 2013 in the $125,000 Tiznow Stakes on April 27 at Betfair Hollywood Park, owner-trainer Bill Spawr said Sunday after the gelding worked five furlongs at Santa Anita. Amazombie has not started since Nov. 3, when his frustrating 2012 campaign ended with an eighth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita. Amazombie was 2 for 6 in 2012. During his championship campaign in 2011, he won 5 of 9, including the BC Sprint. The time of the 5 a.m. workout by Amazombie was slow, as were many times Sunday. “Last week he went in 59 and 4 [recorded time 1:00]. Today he comes back and goes 1:02 and 4,” Spawr said. “He’s the same horse.” Amazombie, who has won 12 races and $1,920,378 from 29 starts, will face the streaking Mel’s Game in the 7 ½-furlong Tiznow. Mel’s Game has won three straight, including a California-bred allowance on March 17. He is trained by Mike Mitchell.
