Sam Houston track report

Sam Houston Race Park will offer 30 stakes worth more than $1 million during its annual Quarter Horse meet, which will open June 24. The 38-date season will run through Sept. 11.

Last year, Sam Houston ran 95 dates for Quarter Horses while picking up dates from Retama Park and Lone Star Park, which hosted the Breeders' Cup.

This year, the top stakes at Sam Houston include the Grade 1, $95,000-added MBNA Texas Challenge Championship on July 9 and the Grade 1, $100,000-added Sam Houston Futurity on Sept. 9.

The Texas Summer Showdown, a card featuring four stakes worth a combined $140,000, will be held July 29. During the same weekend, Sam Houston will host the Texas Quarter Horse Association yearling sale.

Stall applications are due May 27, and top trainers Janet VanBebber, Kenneth Roberts, Heath Taylor, Duane Hartsell, John Buchanan, and Toby Keeton have already submitted stall applications, said Eric Johnston, racing secretary at Sam Houston.
