Sam Houston: Racehorses nearing retirement seek new homes

Email

Sam Houston on Saturday will host an event showcasing racehorses nearing retirement to prospective buyers. The event will be in the saddling paddock starting at 10 a.m. Central. It is put on by the Paddock Foundation, a nonprofit rehoming and aftercare organization founded by the Texas Thoroughbred Association. The potential buyers negotiate purchases with the connections of the showcased horses.

“Helping Thoroughbreds on to their next career is the mission of the Paddock Foundation,” said foundation president Hal Wiggins, who as a trainer won the Kentucky Oaks with Rachel Alexandra.

Tracy Sheffield, who is coordinating the event, also put on a similar event at Lone Star.

“At the Lone Star Park event last July, 18 horses were brought to the paddock to be shown to prospective buyers, and at least three-fourths of them sold,” she said in a release from the Texas Thoroughbred Association. “They were sold for a variety of future careers, including hunters, riding horses, polo, and three-day eventing.”
