Sam Houston: 'Princess' top claimer

Wayne's Princess, whose first win at the Sam Houston Race Park meet came against $7,500 claimers, will be among the favorites Saturday night in the track's $35,000 Double Your Flavor Stakes.

A seven-furlong race for statebred fillies and mares, the Double Your Flavor is the final stakes of the meet, which will close Sunday night. The race is named for a horse who won a record 17 races at Sam Houston.

Wayne's Princess will be honored Sunday as claimer of the meet for her 3-for-4 meeting at Sam Houston. After winning for $7,500, she beat $15,000 claimers, finished second in a $10,000 starter, then won an allowance over Halo Tyra, whom she will face again in the Double Your Flavor.

Bobby Walker Jr. will ride Wayne's Princess for Charles McKamie and trainer Bret Calhoun. Earlier in her career, Wayne's Princess, now 4, won the $25,000 Miss Houston Stakes for 2-year-olds at Sam Houston.

Halo Tyra just missed after setting most of the pace in that last-out seven-furlong allowance, and she should be sharp for the Double Your Flavor. Leading trainer Steve Asmussen has given the mount to Jeremy Beasley.

Others of note in the field include Khazi, who will return to racing with statebreds after taking on open company at Fair Grounds in her last several starts, and Dust Pebble, who will be shooting for her fourth straight win. She is trained by second-leading trainer Danny Pish.

* Candid Glen, who won the Explosive Bid at Fair Grounds last week at 84-1, has been named turf horse of the meet at Sam Houston. He won his third straight Connally Breeders' Cup at the track in February. Call Me Lefty, a two-time stakes winner this meet, is the horse of the meet at Sam Houston.
