Sam Houston: Manyriverstocross makes Tomball her first stakes win
Email
Manyriverstocross became a stakes winner Saturday night at Sam Houston Race Park, when she held off Vilao by a neck in the $50,000 Tomball. It was another neck back in third to pacesetter Sera’s Tunnel. The Tomball, at 1 1/16 miles on turf, was restricted to fillies and mares bred in Texas.
Manyriverstocross ($27.20) raced close to the pace set by Sera’s Tunnel, who put up fractions of 24.36 seconds for the opening quarter, 46.85 for the half-mile, and 1:12.41 for six furlongs. Manyriverstocross overtook the leader and went on to cover the distance on firm ground in 1:44.56.
“The filly ran a big race for me,” said Gerardo Mora, who was aboard for trainer Bart Evans.
Manyriverstocross has now won 3 of 6 starts and $69,301 for owner Robert M. Evans. She is a 4-year-old daughter of Minister Eric and the Grade 3-winning mare River of Rum. Manyriverstocross came into the Tomball off a fourth-place finish in the $50,000 Fiesta Mile at Retama Park near San Antonio.
Best Bets
MONCLOVA galloped out strongly after closing belatedly in her second trip postward May 26, from which the runner-up exited to graduate with a 68 Beyer. The daughter of Queen's Plate winner Niigon is bred to run long, and can break through with the stretchout from six and a half furlongs to a mile and a sixteenth. BE MIND PHIL is returning on short rest off a closing second in her debut, going a mile around one turn on the grass. She has a blend of speed and stamina in her pedigree.
