Sam Houston: 'Gold' to Jersey Lilly


Sound of Gold, who won the five-furlong Willowbrook Stakes for the second straight year last Saturday night, will stretch out around two turns next. She will point to the $40,000 Jersey Lilly at Sam Houston, trainer Paul Pearson said.

The 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares will be run April 10.

* Steven Crist, chairman and publisher of Daily Racing Form, will be at Sam Houston on Friday and Saturday to hold two handicapping seminars and sign copies of his new book, "Betting on Myself."

Crist's first seminar will begin at 6 p.m. Central on Friday. The second will be at 2 p.m. Saturday.

* A silent auction to benefit the Jockey Crisis Fund will be held at Sam Houston on Saturday. Among the auction items are two tickets to the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships at Lone Star Park on Oct. 30.

* Kent Carter, a veterinarian and professor, has been appointed to the Texas Racing Commission by Gov. Rick Perry.

* Jim Helzer, an owner and breeder, has been re-elected president of the Texas Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association.

* Sam Houston-based jockey Kerwin Clark is closing in on career win 2,000. He had 1,986 through Monday.
