Sam Houston: Four in row for Devout Sinner


Devout Sinner won her fourth consecutive stakes when she drew clear by three-quarters of a length as the favorite in the $50,000 Distaff Handicap at Sam Houston Race Park in Houston. Slapstick finished second, 1 1/2 lengths in front of third-place finisher Coastalota.

Devout Sinner ($4.20) stalked pacesetters Caustic Remark and Itsaprincess early before taking the lead into the stretch. She covered 1 1/16 miles over a track rated fast in 1:45.51 under regular rider Cliff Berry.

In her three starts before the Distaff, Devout Sinner won the $40,000 Ada Handicap, the $50,000 Oklahoma Classics Day Distaff, and the $25,000 Black Mesa Handicap, all at Remington Park, to be voted that track's horse of the meet. For her win Saturday night, she earned $30,000 and improved her record to 6 wins in 9 starts for earnings of $170,875. She is owned and trained by Joan Charlton.
