Sam Houston: Color Code continues hot hand for Asmussen, Chapa in Two Altazano
Email
Trainer Steve Asmussen and jockey Roman Chapa have been on a stakes tear at Sam Houston Race Park. They have won three stakes at the Houston track over the last three weekends, capped by Color Code’s front-running score in Saturday night’s $100,000 Two Altazano.
The Two Altazano, a one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies, is part of the Texas Stallion Stakes series. The $100,000 Jim’s Orbit for colts and geldings shared a card with the race, with Defiant Flyer running down the field to win, paying $25.20.
Color Code ($7.60) led throughout, setting fractions of 24.04 for the opening quarter and 48.06 for the half-mile. She then powered home by four lengths over Nothinbettertodo, covering the distance on a track rated good in 1:39.93.
“The filly just broke out in front and really relaxed for me,” Chapa said.

Asmussen and Chapa teamed earlier this month to win the $75,000 Champion Energy Services with Great Mills and the $50,000 Jersey Lily with Pleasantly Blessed.
Defiant Flyer rallied to win the Jim’s Orbit by 1 ¾ lengths over Boca Bay. Sword Trick was third. Defiant Flyer covered the mile in 1:39.94. Jesse Campbell came in from Hawthorne to ride for trainer Liane P. Davis.
“Liane said this horse will get the distance,” Campbell said. “That’s the reason I flew in for the race. That’s why we came.”
Defiant Flyer races for Double D. Stables.
Best Bets
A 5-year-old maiden-claimer with a history of breaking slowly is the most probable winner on the Friday-night card. Yikes. However, THREE LITTLE BIRDS ran super in his comeback two weeks ago, and can win this maiden-20 with a better takeoff. Off slowly, he uncorked a big middle move, lost ground sweeping four-wide through the turn, challenged for the lead turning for home, and then flattened out to finish fourth. It was a big effort by a gelding that benefits from an additional half-furlong. With a clean break in his third career start, this is a race he should win.
