Salt Flat Speed wins again in Don Fleming

Salt Flat Speed continued his dominance of the local handicap division with a three-length win over Footprint in the $50,000 Don Fleming Handicap at Northlands on Saturday.

Carrying high weight of 124 pounds, Salt Flat Speed broke alertly under Rico Walcott and took control of the 1 1/16-mile race going into the first turn. After setting quick fractions of 23 seconds, 46.80, and 111.80 for six-furlongs, he 2 1/2 length lead over Footprint into the stretch and was never threatened as he widened his margin. The final time was 1:44.40. Footprint chased Salt Flat Speed the whole way and held on well to finish three-lengths in front of Cool Ventura.

Trained by Jim Meyaard, Salt Flat Speed has won all three stakes for older horses at the current meet. He paid $4 to win.
