Sales yearlings try to cash in

EDMONTON, Alberta - Both $60,000 Sales Stakes, one for for 2-year-old colts and geldings and one for fillies, attracted fields of eight sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs at Northlands Park Saturday.

The stakes are designed to bring attention to the annual yearling sale on Monday, with 196 cataloged. There will also be $50,000 Sales Stakes for 3-year-olds next month and, for the first time, $50,000 Sales Stakes for 4-year-olds in October.

The field for Saturday's colts and geldings division includes Everyday Magic and Chrome Cowboy, who won in the claiming ranks, and Rare Value, who took a maiden special weight race.

Everyday Magic, Northtown Will, and Blinkanhesgone have had stakes experience. All three competed in the Edmonton Juvenile, where Northtown Will finished fourth, Everyday Magic fifth, and Blinkanhesgone seventh.

Also entered in the colts and geldings race are Cinderchance, Super for Two, and Lead on McDuff.

Speedy Gone Sally, trained by Robert Kingston, heads the filly race.

Speedy Gone Sally won her maiden and finished second to Miss Venturous, a Florida-bred, in the Princess Margaret Stakes.

Other fillies in the race who are winners are R Lucinda and Regal Rally. Completing the field are Bear Knows, Imayodelonggal, Royal Cache, Saucy Ciano and Xari.

* The $75,000 City of Edmonton Distaff, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares that is the supporting feature on next Saturday's Canadian Derby program, attracted nine nominees.
