Safely Kept: Gold Mover avoids BC foes

Email

Gold Mover can end a two-race losing streak in Saturday's first race, the $100,000 Safely Kept Handicap for fillies and mares at seven furlongs. While the two losses are uncharacteristic for the 4-year-old who has won 10 of 24 starts and $1,000,530, Gold Mover has at least kept good company. Trained by Mark Hennig, Gold Mover finished a dull fourth behind Mandy's Gold in the six-furlong Honorable Miss Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 2 and second to Carson Hollow in the six-furlong Floral Park Handicap at Belmont Park on Sept. 14.

If there's any consolation to be taken from those losses, at least Mandy's Gold (Distaff) and Carson Hollow (Sprint) are starting in the Breeders' Cup. In her last start over seven furlongs in the Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs in May, Gold Mover was moved from second to first after a rival was disqualified for interference.

Gold Mover is the 120-pound highweight in the Safely Kept Handicap, spotting four rivals five to seven pounds. Gold Mover will break from the rail and will be ridden by Jerry Bailey.

Copper Belle, who is based at Churchill Downs, is seeking her first stakes win. She won an allowance race at Keeneland on Oct. 13. Harmony Lodge was a minor stakes winner at Monmouth Park in 2001 but has only started twice this year, winning an allowance at Saratoga and finishing fourth in the Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont Park. She is likely to set the pace.

The local fillies would surprise if able to win. Oglala Sue is seeking her fourth consecutive win, having won the Huskerette Stakes at Hoosier Park in July and two allowance races in late summer. Victory at Sea drew the outside post. She is well suited to the seven furlongs. On Sept. 15, she won an allowance race over this track.
