S W Aly'svalentine formidable

Email

S W Aly'svalentine, a two-time stakes winner sprinting against Pennsylvania-bred fillies and mares last season, figures to be a short-priced favorite when she heads a field of six older female statebreds in the $75,000 Foxy J.G. Stakes at Philadelphia Park.

In its previous eight runnings, the Foxy J.G. was restricted to 3-year-old fillies, contested during the summer, and run at distances ranging from seven furlongs to a mile and 70 yards. For the first time, it will be open to 4-year-olds and up and contested at six furlongs.

S W Aly'svalentine, a 6-year-old based at Penn National with trainer John Randolph, has won 12 of 29 starts and has a 5-for-10 record at Philly Park. Last season, she won the Pistol Packer Handicap coming off a five-month layoff, won the Ambassador of Luck Handicap, and closed out her campaign beating open allowance company on Dec. 3.

Based on S W Aly'svalentine's best races, it will take a Beyer Speed Figure in the low to mid-90s to beat her. None of her five rivals has run a Beyer Figure faster than an 89, which makes it difficult to find a viable alternative to the logical favorite.

Jet Away Jane, the co-highweight at 124 pounds, was a four-time winner in 2007 and finished within 2 1/4 lengths of S W Aly'svalentine in the Pistol Packer after being carried wide on the turn. The last two times she sprinted while returning from a layoff, Jet Away Jane turned in sharp seconds.

Coffee Shop shows the best recent race, a win in the slop over open $35,000 optional claimers in her first start off the claim for trainer Scott Lake.
