'Runaway' goes after win No. 5

EDMONTON, Alberta - Young Runaway will be gunning for his fifth win of the year in Sunday's $22,000 claiming feature at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Young Runaway's last victory came two starts back, for Sunday's price. Red Exit, coupled with Young Runaway, is still looking for his first win of the year.

Dublin's Woodwin won two straight for this price in June. He is dropping after being claimed for $28,000 last time out.

Kissthissky, who won four times earlier this year against lesser company, is making his second start since being claimed for $22,000.

Rounding out the field of 10 are Intore, Generally On, Delta Epsilon, Dr. Mo, King Me, and Cee El.

Westerner lures 14

Friday's $40,000 Westerner Handicap has attracted 14 nominees. At 1 5/16 miles, the Westerner is a prep for the $100,00 Speed to Spare, at 1 3/8 miles here Sept. 6.

Among the nominations is Toronto invader Gist of Art, who will be in the care of Lorne Berg, the owner-trainer of 1993 Alberta champion 3-year-old Prix de Crouton.

Joan Petrowski is aiming Bubblegum Kid at a Speed to Spare repeat and his main competition is expected to come from Kalfaari and Lord Shogun, who were a neck apart in the recent Klondike. All three were nominated to the Westerner.

The Klondike was Kalfaari's eighth consecutive victory and his second since shipping from Winnipeg. Lord Shogun showed great improvement in the Klondike following a brief invasion of Woodbine and appears to be fully recovered from the injuries that curtailed his 2002 campaign.
