Ruidoso: Hes Relentless, Wagon Tales top qualifiers for All American Futurity


Hes Relentless and Wagon Tales emerged as the fastest qualifiers for the Grade 1, $2.6 million All American Futurity for Quarter Horses after two days of trials for the Labor Day Classic. The 28 qualifying heats drew 280 entrants and spanned Thursday and Friday at Ruidoso Downs, and the horses with the five fastest times from each day earned one of 10 spots in the finale. It was the first time the trials had been divided over two programs.

Wagon Tales put up the overall fastest time when he won his 440-yard trial in 21.02 seconds on Friday. Hes Relentless won his Thursday trial in 21.14. The horses were making their first starts since the Grade 1, $1 million Heritage Place Futurity at Remington, a race in which Hes Relentless was second by a head, edging third-place finisher Wagon Tales.

Wagon Tales ($4) won the fourth of 14 trials Friday, a race that also produced the afternoon’s second-fastest qualifier, Skuze Pleeze, and fifth-fastest qualifier, Fatal Policy. Wagon Tales won by a length under Cody Jensen.
“He’s a big, rangy quarter-mile type of horse,” said Jensen, who was aboard for JNB Enterprises and trainer Judd Kearl.

Jensen had one other qualifier, Houdini. Trainer Blane Wood also had two qualifiers, Especially Tres and Fatal Policy, and both were ridden by Ricky Ramirez.

The complete list of qualifiers and times from Thursday were: Hes Relentless (21.14); Especially Tres (21.19); Handsome Jack Flash (21.20); Houdini (21.23); and You N How Many More (21.26), who won a shake for the fifth spot, over Fly Thru the Fire.

The qualifiers and times from Friday were: Wagon Tales (21.02); Skuze Pleeze (21.17 seconds); Wagon Full of Gold (21.33); Reagal Eagle (21.36); and Fatal Policy (21.41).

Ruidoso puts on trials for the Grade 1, $2.8 million All American Derby on Saturday. Wicked Courage will be seeking his 10th straight win when he runs in the 10th race. There will be a $73,325 TriSuper carryover into the card. The bet runs on the fourth and sixth races. It was last hit June 30.
