Ruffaroundtheedges a real road warrior

Email

Ruffaroundtheedges makes herself at home no matter where she roams. Her five wins have come at five different racetracks, with her latest conquest being Retama Park near San Antonio.

Ruffaroundtheedges equaled her career-best Beyer Figure, an 84, last Saturday night at Retama, when she closed strongly to take the $50,000 Lakeway Stakes. She came rolling for a 2 1/4-length score, covering the six furlongs in 1:10.76. The Lakeway, for 3-year-old fillies, was her first stakes win. Her other wins have come at Delta Downs, Sam Houston Race Park, Lone Star Park, and Evangeline Downs.

Remington Park in Oklahoma City might be the next frontier for Ruffaroundtheedges. Her connections are looking at the stakes program there.

"We're looking at trying to stretch her out," said Alan Love Sr., who trains Ruffaroundtheedges for Shelley Draper. "We'll see what races come up."

Love said one option is the $75,000 Remington Park Oaks at a mile on turf on Oct. 18.

* Trainer Danny Pish, who has won the last nine training titles at Retama, predicted he would have a fight on his hands in his quest for a 10th, and two weeks into the meet it looks like that might be the case. Pish is tied atop the standings with Bret Calhoun, who has won with 6 of his first 11 starters at Retama. Calhoun has sent a division of horses to the meet for the first time in eight years.
