Royal Regan upsets in Buckland

Held well back early by jockey Nick Santagata, Royal Regan came charging from last along the outside to pass her seven rivals and win the $60,000 Buckland Stakes at Colonial Downs by 2 1/4 lengths.

Chinchilla also came from the rear of the pack in the 5 1/2-furlong turf race, winding up second, a half-length ahead of Privately Approved.

Lindas Roar had led the field through a quarter-mile in 21.97 seconds and a half in 44.77. When she tired, Zooming By and Privately Approved dueled briefly for the lead before Zooming By began to fade. Still as far back as sixth at the top of the stretch, Royal Regan responded to Santagata's right-handed pressure and surged to victory.

Tiger Fever, the 2-1 favorite, was in contention in upper stretch but gave way and finished sixth.

Royal Regan, a 4-year-old daughter of Royal Academy trained by Cathy Roundtree, paid $16.80, running the distance in 1:03.10 on a firm course. She is owned by Seven Gables Farm.
