Romans: ‘I would never knock American racing'

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Dale Romans said he isn’t done with American racing and doesn’t plan to go to Hong Kong anytime soon.

Comments attributed to Romans in a story in the South China Morning Post said the Eclipse Award-winning trainer was done with American racing and was interested in plying his trade in Hong Kong.

“I’m ready for an adventure, and I’m so sick of what’s happened to the sport in the U.S. I’m done with it,” Romans, who was in Dubai last weekend to run Keen Ice in the Dubai World Cup, was quoted as saying.

“I’m a horseman, and I think races should be won by the better horseman, not something else. I was very impressed with what I saw in Hong Kong when I was there, and I know that, because the vet side of racing is so tightly controlled there, it’s the superior horseman who will succeed. They’ve never had an American trainer, but if they want me, I’d love to train there.”

On Wednesday, standing on the rail at Gulfstream Park, Romans attempted to clarify his comments.

“There isn’t a person around who believes I said that stuff,” Romans said. “I would never knock American racing.”

Roman said he is tired of a lot of the bureaucracy – including audits and health care – involved in America.

“When I said I was tired and done with this, I was talking about labor boards, immigration department ... not horse racing,” he said.

A few years ago, Romans did tour the facilities in Hong Kong and liked what he saw. He said he would be interested in training there but not is actively pursuing it.

“If they ever called, you’d have to think about it,” Romans said. “If I ever went, it would be to take on a new challenge at this stage of my life.”

Dale, you shoot off your mouth too often. Kinda like the time you said CA Chrome didn't belong in the Derby and we know how that ended.

The SCMP writers - Alan Aitken, Michael Cox, Andrew Hawkins - would never make these things up. If anything they are too conservative in a town where politics plays a part more than anything else. I would bet on their reputation any day of the week over a character like Dale Romans.

"The SCMP writers would never make these things up."

That's like saying politicians never lie.

Sorry, its like the boy who cry's wolf -- you stop believing....

Anybody that is stupid enough last year to think  that Keen Ice would be  a horse we would be "talking out for  horse  of the year this time of year next (2016) year" is a big bag of wind anyway. I'll give him my net jet card to go NOW

No lasix for dale and tammy in dubai.  Six back of the pack finishes.  Do you have skills ?  Maybe you need the meds/peds.

The media/reporters are a joke -- we've all learned now that you cant say what you mean because they always spin and take things out of context -- I side completely with Dale.

Even if Dale didnt say or mean that -- I think it is true - American racing is a joke and through the recent big decline in the sport its even worse.

As a 40+ year bettor and use to go every weekend (Sat/Sun) -- I find it very disgusting what is happening to racing and have bet very little since last year -- I'm now down to just big race days (World cup, TC Series, BC)

The sport is so corrupt and fixed now at ALL levels.

Are you going to believe Michael Cox,  who is an experienced  racing journalist with the SCMP,  or Dale Romans claiming he was misquoted?   Mr. Romans:  there are indeed many people around who believe you said that stuff.  It's pathetic really seeing you now trying to retract the comments you made.

It's clear what he meant.  American horse racing has been destroyed by the majority of trainers being drug cheating scum.  Maybe Romans only cheats to stay afloat and would welcome a drug free environment?

Romans testified for rudy to get a kentucky license.  Hey dale, how are you getting along with your brother ?

I was there at the Comm meeting, he's a sell out now he's turning on his cheating friends,he don't mind as long as he's not in the same race

i thought it was a odd comment from some one who has been against detention barns and ridding the game of Lasix. He would not last more than a few months in Hong Kong .they take breaking the rules seriously there. Even if he did not say it .it is still an accurate portrait of racing in America . just hope the derby stays clean and with heightened security otherwise i might have to quit completely.

Very well put Ray.  He wouldn't survive in Britain, Ireland, France, as well as Hong Kong.

All racing jurisdictions (other than North America) race drug free.  Time is running out for the systematic drugging of horses.
