DEL MAR, Calif. - Roman Ruler confirmed his place at the top of California's 2-year-old male division with a dramatic win in Sunday's $150,000 at Del Mar.

To remain unbeaten in two starts, Roman Ruler ($3) had to overcome a slow start and avoid a one-horse spill on the turn before catching the leaders. Roman Ruler drew off to win by seven lengths.

The race was marred by a breakdown to Wetherly, who suffered a compound fracture to his left foreleg before the quarter pole. Wetherly was euthanized.

Roman Ruler was racing behind Wetherly on the turn. When the accident occurred, jockey Corey Nakatani steadied Roman Ruler briefly before guiding his mount between jockey Kent Desormeaux, who was unseated from Wetherly, and the injured colt.

Roman Ruler, third entering the stretch, took the lead before the eighth pole, quickly drawing clear under a handride. Owned by Bill Bianco and David Shimmon and trained by Bob Baffert, Roman Ruler finished 6 1/2 furlongs in a sharp 1:15.93.

"It could have been a disaster but we got lucky," Baffert said.

The slow start and the spill provided anxious moments for Shimmon.

"I give Corey credit. He didn't panic and he stayed under control," Shimmon said. "He made his move when the distance became his friend."

Actxecutive, trained by Baffert, finished second, 10 lengths in front of the maiden Slewsbag. Things Happen finished fourth.

Roman Ruler has earned $115,800. He was purchased for $500,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
