Rollins out of hospital

Jockey Chance Rollins, who suffered a critical head injury in a June 11 spill at Bay Meadows, was transferred from Stanford Hospital to the Santa Clara Valley Rehabilita-tion Center on Friday.

The 36-year-old Rollins will undergo extensive physical and mental reconditioning at the rehabilitation center, which specializes in traumatic injuries known as diffuse axonal injuries, caused when the head is rapidly accelerated or decelerated.

"The rehab center is part of the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and is an extension of Stanford Hospital. It has world experts in diffuse axonal injuries," the Bay Meadows track physician, Dr. David Seftel, said.

Rollins' recovery after being in a medically induced coma has been phenomenal, according to Seftel. Rollins was able to breathe without aid of a ventilator on Tuesday and was able to walk on Wednesday. He began physical therapy on Thursday.
