Robert Wehle, breeder of Win, dies

Robert G. Wehle, who bred Win, the first New York-bred to reach $1 million in earnings, died last month in Syracuse, N.Y. He was 82.

Wehle, whose family owned and operated Genesee Brewing Co. in Rochester, N.Y., for decades until selling the business two years ago, sold Win as a 2-year-old for $8,000.

Win, who died in June at age 22, earned $1,407,210 during his racing career. Among the gelding's 14 career wins were victories in two Grade 1 races, the Man o' War and Manhattan.

Wehle was also a renowned breeder of English pointers and owned kennels in Henderson, N.Y., and Midway, Ala.
