Robert Carey of Hawthorne dies


CHICAGO - Robert Carey, a member of family that has long owned Hawthorne Race Course, died Saturday night at his home in Riverside, Ill. Carey, 67, suffered serious injuries in a fall last November. He had battled back and actually returned to work this spring at Hawthorne.

Through the years Carey held various positions at Hawthorne. His most recent title was assistant to the president. For many years, Carey oversaw the Hawthorne backstretch and maintenance of the racetrack itself, and could be seen each morning during Hawthorne meets walking carefully around the turf course, assessing its condition. Carey helped revamp the course in 1995.

Carey is survived by his wife, Peg, nine children, and 22 grandchildren.

Funeral services are Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 6 Herrick Rd, in Riverside.
