River Maid back with females in Ontario Fashion Stakes

Michael Burns
River Maid earned her first stakes win in the Ballade in June.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – River Maid will be in search of her first graded stakes victory when she takes on five rivals in Sunday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Ontario Fashion Stakes for older fillies and mares over six furlongs on Tapeta at Woodbine.

River Maid faced the boys last time out in the Kenora Stakes, which was restricted to graduates of the local yearling sale. She finished second, three-quarters of a length behind Jacks Escarpment, after losing ground on the far turn while waiting for running room under Gary Boulanger. Trainer Robert Tiller said River Maid has exited the Kenora in good order.

“She’s doing good,” he said. “She’s in good order, and she should run well.”

River Maid has won six of her 12 career starts and is 2 for 4 at the six-furlong distance. She won her first stakes in the six-furlong Ballade Stakes against Ontario-sired company in June, defeating She’s Explosive by a nose. Boulanger has been aboard for River Maid’s last three starts and retains the mount.

Ontario Fashion Stakes, Race 4

Key Contenders

River Maid, by Where’s the Ring
Last 3 Beyers: 93-90-88

◗ There appears to be ample speed in this six-horse field, so River Maid and Boulanger should be able to get an ideal stalking position early to set them up for the stretch run.

Cactus Kris, by Cactus Ridge
Last 3 Beyers: 80-90-91

◗ She won this event last year with an 88 Beyer Speed Figure and, like River Maid, should be coming with a late run from off the pace.

◗ Her best race of the season was her five-length win in the Grade 3 Hendrie Stakes here May 8, where she earned a 96 Beyer.

She’s Explosive, by Old Forester
Last 3 Beyers: 92-94-88

◗ After two races on turf, she’ll get back on Tapeta for just the second time. In her first start on the surface, she was second to River Maid in the Ballade Stakes, where she earned an 88 Beyer.

◗ She was second to Lady Shipman two starts back in the Grade 3 Royal North Stakes on turf and figures to be among the early speed threats while starting from the rail.

Southern Ring, by Speightstown
Last 3 Beyers: 81-87-87

◗ She’s been idle since finishing fourth in the Zadracarta Stakes over seven furlongs on turf July 1.

◗ She’s made just two starts this year but did show potential as a 3-year-old, winning the Ruling Angel Stakes over Green Doctor in her third career start.
