Rich in Spirit wins the Grade 3, $165,450 Locust Grove Handicap at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

Under confident handling from Mark Guidry, Rich in Spirit collared front-running Cape Hope inside the eighth pole en route to a popular score as the odds-on favorite Saturday in the Grade 3, $165,450 at Churchill Downs.

Rich in Spirit maintained striking position throughout the 1 1/8-mile turf race, permitting Cape Hope to lope along in easy fractions while staying in the clear. Once Guidry called on her down the stretch, Rich in Spirit was up to the task and finished 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Cape Hope, a 22-1 shot. Pyrana rallied late to be third in a field of seven fillies and mares.

Rich in Spirit paid $3.40 after finishing in 1:50 over a course rated good.

Tom Proctor trains Rich in Spirit, who has won 6 of 14 starts and earned $487,951. The Locust Grove marks her second graded victory, following the Regret last year over the Churchill turf. In her previous start, Rich in Spirit finished second to My Typhoon in the June 17 Mint Julep at Churchill.

* Earlier Saturday, Bright One ($2.60) pulled clear for a 7 1/4-length victory in the $70,700 Forestry, an overnight stakes for 3-year-olds. Ridden by Guidry, Bright One finished one mile in 1:35.57 over a fast main track.

* Julien Leparoux most likely clinched the spring-meet jockey title after riding two winners Saturday. Into Sunday's closing-day card, Leparoux had an 85-81 lead over Rafael Bejarano.
