Retama Park: Bakken Baby to get rest ahead of Texas Stallion Stakes

Bakken Baby, a 2-year-old filly who earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 79 for her maiden special weight win at Lone Star on June 28, is being freshened and ultimately will point for a division of the Texas Stallion Stakes this fall at Retama Park, trainer Karl Broberg said.

The San Antonio-area track opens its meet in October.

“She’s a Texas-bred, and there’s no spots for her right now,” Broberg said. “We’re just going to kick her out for a while.”

Bakken Baby won the maiden race in her second start, cruising home more than five lengths ahead of the runner-up while covering 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.59. She is a daughter of Valid Expectations and races for her breeders, Larry Huntsinger and Phil Head.

Broberg said Bakken Baby is not eligible for the $100,000 fillies division of the Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurity, to be held at Lone Star on Saturday. The race is one of four stakes on the closing-day program. Broberg will be active in some of the other races. He said Molly’s Honour is on deck for the $50,000 Valor Farm, and Cat’s Classy Rider will go in the $50,000 Assault.

Broberg, the third-leading trainer at Lone Star, said following the meet that he will be racing predominantly at Evangeline Downs and Louisiana Downs. He currently is active at those Louisiana meets and will be moving more horses into his division at Louisiana Downs.
