Smack Smack punched his ticket to the $250,000 Springboard Mile next month at Remington Park when he overtook Guns Loaded nearing the wire for a half-length win in Friday night’s local prep, the $100,000 Clever Trevor.

Guns Loaded held second, while it was another 4 3/4 lengths back in third to Time Iz Flyin. Dunkin Bend, the 3-5 favorite off his win in the Grade 3 Sapling at Monmouth, finished fourth after dueling with Guns Loaded.

The Springboard, for 2-year-olds at a mile, will be held on the closing-day card Dec. 15. Texas Bling won the race last year over eventual Travers winner Will Take Charge, who most recently was second in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Smack Smack ($12.60) settled about eight lengths off the pace set by Dunkin Bend and Guns Loaded, who dueled through fractions of 22.74 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.72 for the half-mile. Guns Loaded moved clear in the stretch, but could not hold off the determined bid of Smack Smack, who covered the seven furlongs on a fast track in 1:23.31.

“He got me there,” said Jake Barton, who came in to ride for trainer Don Von Hemel.

The Clever Trevor was the third career stakes win for Smack Smack, who won the Prairie Gold Juvenile and Prairie Juvenile Mile earlier this year at Prairie Meadows. He is a son of Closing Argument. Smack Smack races for his breeder, the Dream Walkin’ Farms operation of country artist Toby Keith and his family.

“We’re going to send him back to the Springboard if Don’s okay with that,” Keith said following the Clever Trevor.

Von Hemel agreed the Springboard is the next target for Smack Smack, who has now won 4 of 5 starts and $165,360.
