Remington Park: Skate Away rolls

Email

Skate Away, who has been racing closer to the pace since adding blinkers four starts ago, defeated Maysville Slew by 8 1/4 lengths to win the $125,000 DeBartolo Memorial. It was another three-quarters of a length back in third to Major Rhythm.

The race, which was scheduled for turf, was moved to a sloppy main track after wet weather hit the area.

Skate Away ($12.80) did not mind. He broke well and settled in just behind Waupaca, who led the field through fractions of 23.80 seconds for the opening quarter and 48.60 for the half-mile mark. Skate Away took over soon afterward, and went on to cover the distance in 1:51.15.

Gerard Melancon rode Skate Away for Mack Robinson and trainer Jeff Trosclair. The gelding earned $75,000 for the win, and his record now stands at 5 wins from 18 starts for earnings of $267,590.

Trosclair said the gelding is being pointed for the $100,000 Louisiana Downs Handicap at Louisiana Downs on Sept. 21.
