Rematch on tap in Evangeline Mile

The cast has been set for Saturday's $200,000 Evangeline Mile Handicap. A total of nine passed the entry box on Wednesday for the meeting's richest event.

Sonoma Cat will be the co-highweight on Saturday at 118 pounds along with Missed the Prom. Trained by Steve Asmussen, Sonoma Cat defeated Missed the Prom by three-quarters of a length in the $50,000 Oak Hall Stakes at Evangeline last month. In his previous start, Sonoma Cat scored at Churchill Downs in allowance company in mid-June. Asmussen has given a return call to Randall Toups.

Evangeline newcomer Marvel Wood, trained by Eric Guillot and weighted at 115 pounds, appears to be the wild card of this year's Mile. The Florida-bred Marvel Wood, a 4-year-old son of Ormsby, has been well traveled in a 17-race career that began in Florida, then moved up the East Coast before shifting to the West Coast earlier this year for three unplaced efforts at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park. Most recently, he turned in a sharp win in optional claiming company at Louisiana Downs, drawing clear by almost eight lengths and earning a 107 Beyer Speed Figure. Lonnie Meche, aboard for that last win, makes the journey down from his Bossier City base of operations and will once again be in the saddle.

The others in the field are Castle Berry Road, 116 pounds, Carlos Gonzalez; Gowden Mile, 114, Billy Patin; Got the Last Laugh, 115, Donnie Meche; State Power, 116, Coby Hernandez; Ide Like a Double, 116, Kerwin Clark; and Fast Feat, 113, Marlon St. Julien.
