Red Mile: Archangel headlines Kentucky Futurity

Tim Tetrick picks up the drive on Archangel.

There will be no Trotting Triple Crown winner this year, but Archangel could claim two of the jewels with a victory in Sunday’s 120th Kentucky Futurity for 3-year-old trotters at The Red Mile in Lexington.

Archangel won the Triple Crown’s first jewel, the Yonkers Trot, in July while Market Share won the second leg, the Hambletonian Stakes, in August. Market Share is not eligible to the Kentucky Futurity and is scheduled to compete Saturday in a late closer for 3-year-old male trotters at The Red Mile.

The Kentucky Futurity is contested in heats and requires a horse to win twice to be declared the champion. The Futurity attracted a field of 13 horses, which was divided into two first-heat divisions. Archangel will compete in the first division, a six-horse field, and start from post five with driver Tim Tetrick.

Eighteen horses have won two of the three legs of the Trotting Triple Crown, most recently Muscle Hill in 2009. The most recent horse to sweep the series was Glidemaster in 2006.

Archangel, who was fourth in the Hambletonian, has won 10 of 15 races this year and earned $714,236 for owners Alan Hainsworth, Clare Semer and Peter Arrigenna, who also trains the colt.

“I think he’s going to do pretty good down here,” the New York-based Arrigenna said. “We’ve been here since last Wednesday and he’s been jogging and training here. He trained real good (Wednesday) and jogged real good today. I think he should do well.

“He comes off all his races pretty strong, so I think he’ll be good for two heats; hopefully, not three. If we have to go three, we’ll go three, but we’ll just take it one race at a time. It’s going to be a good race. We’ll see what happens.”

Archangel enters the Kentucky Futurity off an eighth-place finish in the New York Sire Stakes championship on Sept. 22 at Yonkers Raceway. Archangel, driven by Jim Morrill Jr., went off stride in a rainstorm on the final turn as he challenged eventual winner Coraggioso for the lead.

“At Yonkers when you start moving that fast around the last turn on the outside, they all make breaks,” Arrigenna said. “Water was coming across the track; I don’t know if he was slipping. He warmed up real good before the rain. I don’t know if he just wasn’t getting his footing. He was moving pretty good in the last turn and just couldn’t negotiate it. Things happen. There is nothing you can do about it, so just write it off and head to the next one.”

Tetrick, who is the regular driver for Market Share and ranks No. 1 in purses among all drivers this season, picked up the Kentucky Futurity drive on Archangel after a lunchtime encounter with Hainsworth this week. Tetrick has driven Archangel once in his career, in his first lifetime victory last season at Vernon Downs.

“Alan saw Timmy,” Arrigenna said. “He’s available, he’s hot, he’s winning everything. (Alan) made that decision. There is nothing wrong with having Timmy Tetrick driving your horse, that’s for sure.”

The Kentucky Futurity also includes Stanley Dancer Memorial division winner and Canadian Trotting Classic runner-up Little Brown Fox, Pennsylvania Sire Stakes champion Magic Tonight and Hambletonian runner-up Guccio, who won a division of the Bluegrass Stakes at The Red Mile on Sept. 30. Money On My Mind also was a Bluegrass division winner, edging Little Brown Fox by a nose.
