Always B Miki is now the fastest standarbred in history!

The Jimmy Takter-trained 5-year-old, with David Miller in the bike, stopped the timer in 1:46 at the Red Mile on Sunday afternoon to eclipse the all-age race record of 1:46 4/5 held by multiple horses and the 1:46 1/5 time trial mark held for decades by Cambest.

Shamballa was fastest off the gate in the $138,000 Allerage Farms Pace and helped set the stage for Always B Miki by posting a 26 1/5 opening quarter. Just past that first call, Miller said GO with Always B Miki, and he uncorked an extreme burst of speed to clear the front before the half timed in 52 2/5.

Miller was able to get a 27 2/5 breather as horse and driver passed three-quarters up by a bit more than a length in 1:19 4/5. The field was surprisingly tight-knit considering the fractions, but the stage was set for something special.

Ready to etch his place in history, Always B Miki kept his challengers at bay while sprinting home in 26 1/5 under Miller urging while the crowd cheered him home vigorously. Shamballa and All Bets Off finished 1 1/4 and two lengths back in second and third, respectively.

“It’s incredible,” said Miller just moments after the win. ““He did it. I was just along for the ride.”

Takter was actually concerned going into the race because of an issue Always B Miki had while warming up.

“I had trouble warming him up because he was very scared of the shadows, and I put the shadow roll on him,” said Takter. “I said to David (Miller), be careful, score him down and see how he is. A world record would be nice, but we have to win the race.”

Takter praised Shamballa for the strong effort before putting the race in perspective.

“I thought that we had a heck of a shot,” said Takter about his thoughts at the three-quarter pole. “It is not easy to do. I take my hat off for Shamballa, who was second. He fought right to the wire.

“This is definitely up there with the Elitlopp and Prix d’Amerique. For me, being from Sweden, to have the fastest pacer ever, it is a big thing; a fantastic feeling."

Always B Miki ($2.10) is owned by Bluewood Stable, Roll The Dice Stable and Christina Takter. He has now won nine of 15 starts this year with over $1,000,000 in earnings. He is a 27-time winner in his career with $2,296,368 on his card.

The son of Always A Virgin-Artstopper will make his next start in either the Breeders Crown eliminations for older pacers on October 21 at The Meadowlands or in the final on October 28. After that he is expected to finish off his racing career in the TVG Final at The Meadowlands before heading to stud at Diamond Creek Farms.
