Red Gulch fetches $420,000 at Tattersalls sale

The market peaked late Monday at the Tattersalls autumn horses in training sale in Newmarket, England, where French stakes winner Red Gulch was the opening-day session-topper at about $420,000.

The 4-year-old Kyllachy gelding was among the last horses to sell Monday night and generated the session’s highest price on a bid from agent Anthony Stroud. Stroud did not name his client but indicated the gelding was headed for the Dubai Carnival.

Red Gulch so far has won five listed races and most recently took the Prix du Ranelagh at Longchamp. Trainer Ed Walker consigned him to the Tattersalls sale.

The opening session’s gross and average both fell 13 percent, but median increased 6 percent, and the buyback rate also improved from 24 percent to 21 percent. The session sold 224 horses for about $6,477,576, for an average of about $28,918 and an approximate median of $15,540.

The sale was to continue through Oct. 27.
