Record Claiming Crown list

Officials with the Claiming Crown announced Wednesday that a record 357 horses have been nominated to the seven-race series, which is being held in Kentucky for the first time this year. The ninth annual Claiming Crown will be run at Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky., on Aug. 4.

The Claiming Crown's coordinator, Nat Wess, said the record number of nominations is owed partly to "extreme interest" from Kentucky horsemen. Wess estimated that about half of the nominations came from Kentucky-based owners or trainers.

Among the stakes winners who have been nominated are Me My Mine, Private Scandal, Shaggy Mane, General Charley, and Lookinforthesecret. Another nominee is Golden Hare, who recently won at Churchill Downs for his 11th victory in his last 12 starts.

The Claiming Crown has been held annually at Canterbury Park in Minnesota since 1999 except for one running, when it was run at Philadelphia Park.

Claiming Crown purses total $600,000, with the races being contested under starter-allowance conditions for horses who have raced for claiming prices ranging from $7,500 to $35,000 since last Aug. 1.

Supplementary nominations to the Claiming Crown can be made by July 20 for 5 percent of the purse of the desired race.
