Recepta recovering from pelvic fracture

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Graded stakes winner Recepta continues to recover at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital’s clinic in Saratoga Springs after suffering a career-ending pelvic fracture while galloping a week ago.

Pelvic fractures are difficult to treat in horses because of their location and because the horse must be kept quiet while still carrying weight on the hind legs. The first month is considered crucial in recovery as the bone begins to knit. Trainer Jimmy Toner also noted that horses stallbound for long periods must be monitored for dehydration because some are inclined to consume less water when inactive.

“She’s smart, so she’s handling everything really well,” Toner said.

Assistant trainer Tiffany Webb, who has been providing updates to the mare’s fans on social media, said she took Recepta’s groom to visit her Tuesday, and “both were happy to see each other.”

Recepta raced for the Phillips Racing Partnership of Darby Dan owner John Phillips, with whom Toner has a long association. The farm is known for developing prominent female families, and Recepta is a relative of Grade 1 winner Wonder Again, trained by Toner.

Toner and Phillips have Defiant Honor, Recepta’s 2-year-old full sister, in training at Saratoga.
