Recapturetheglory out of Preakness

Email

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Recapturetheglory, the only Kentucky Derby starter besides winner Big Brown who was being pointed for the Preakness, came down with a fever Friday night and will not run in the second leg of the Triple Crown next Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

Owner Ronnie Lamarque informed Pimlico officials at 1:50 p.m. Eastern on Saturday that the colt was no longer under consideration.

Lara Van Deren, assistant to trainer Louie Roussel, said Recapturetheglory had a 102 temperature Saturday morning, precluding the colt from training at Churchill Downs. The colt had been scheduled to ship by van to Baltimore later Saturday.

With Recapturetheglory out of the Preakness lineup, it looks as if this will be the first time in 60 years, when Citation swept the 1948 Triple Crown, that only one Derby starter has run back in the Preakness.

Recapturetheglory, winner of the Illinois Derby in April, finished fifth in the Derby.
