R.D. Hubbard and jockey Irwin Rosendo swept both New Mexcico-bred stakes Sunday at Sunland Park, where Reaper held off Gotta Move by a neck in the $85,000 Johnnie Jamison and Renewed Vows proved a half-length better than the runner-up Way to Go Gerda in the $85,000 New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap.

Todd Fincher trains Reaper, while Bart Hone conditions Renewed Vows. The races were among the first stakes of the young meet at Sunland, which opened Friday.

Reaper ($11) always was prominent to win the 6 1/2-furlong Jamison for 3-year-olds and up in 1:14.08. Renewed Vows ($13.20) tracked the pace in the New Mexico State Racing Commission before going on to cover the six furlongs for fillies and mares in 1:09.43.

Hubbard owns and bred the horses, both 3-year-olds by the Forest Wildcat stallion Attila’s Storm. Reaper was winning his second stakes in his last three starts in the Jamison, while Renewed Vows picked up her second straight stakes score behind the New Mexico Cup Filly Championship.

Having raced at Sunland Park for many years, I can tell you that the maintenance crew must have paved the racing strip with concrete. The times of those two races were abnormally fast.
