Real Echo impresses on Best of Ohio Day

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - The five-race Best of Ohio Series, which was held at Thistledown on Saturday, usually goes a long way toward determining the Ohio-bred horse of the year. Judging by Real Echo's decisive victory in the $75,000 Endurance that could well be the case this year.

Real Echo, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, posted a 2 1/4-length front-running win over Cat Singer in the ten-furlong Endurance, and it was some 5 3/4 lengths back to Xtra Jack in third place. Real Echo was timed in 2:06.10 over the fast racing strip and returned $3.40 as the favorite.

In the $50,000 Distaff, Whitewater Way, advanced steadily between horses, and then dug in with determination to catch the pacesetting Oh So Easy in deep stretch and win by 1 1/4 lengths. It was another 4 1/4 lengths back to Ashwood C C in third. Whitewater Way was timed in 1:53.76 for the 1 1/8 miles.

In the $50,000 Best of Ohio Sprint, Ben's Reflection raced in closest attendance to pacesetting Reggie's Winner, who had set rapid fractions into the stretch, and then took over in the stretch to win the six-furlong race by three lengths and stop the teletimer in 1:09.94. Whitermorn was third, 1 3/4 lengths back in the field of nine.

In the 1 1/16-mile Juvenile, Fierce Cat made the lead with a quick move four-wide before going a half-mile, opened a daylight lead on the second turn, then held off the late charge of Bug Hunter to gain a half-length win. Cast No Shadow was an even third, four lengths farther back in the $60,000 race which attracted a 14-horse field.

In the $60,000 John W. Galbreath Memorial for 2-year-old fillies, Bold Passage traveled with the second flight for five furlongs, then quickly passed horses on the second turn to make the lead and win by 2 3/4 lengths over Perfect Connection. Marketable rallied to be third, another four lengths back in the 11-horse field. Bold Passage covered the mile and a sixteenth in 1:49.80.
