Real Dandy wins Zia Park Derby

The consistent Real Dandy picked up his second derby win on Saturday, when he closed for a two and three quarter length win over Lumbre in the $107,600 Zia Park Derby in Hobbs, N.M. Earlier this year, Real Dandy won the Grade 3, $750,000 West Virginia Derby.

Broke Sharply finished third in the Zia Park Derby. Hope For Peace and Military Major were scratched on Saturday.

Real Dandy ($3) settled off the pace vollied by Stormin Away and Broke Sharply, who dueled through an opening quarter in 25.80 seconds and a half-mile in 48.60. Lumbre stalked those two, took the lead in the stretch, then was overtaken by the late-running Real Dandy, who covered the mile and a sixteenth in 1:45.60.

Luis Quinonez rode the winner for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Real Dandy earned $64,560 for the win, which was his fourth from 19 starts. He has also placed second in seven races and third in two others and has earned $819,935. Real Dandy races for Bob and Cathy Zollars.
