Rasmussen pattern keeps popping up

LAS VEGAS - The Hollywood Futurity and Hollywood Starlet are the year's final major stakes races for 2-year-olds, and while neither race will have any bearing on the Eclipse Awards, they feature some nicely bred juveniles.

Hollywood Futurity

Belgravia, who is undefeated in two starts, won the Hollywood Prevue Stakes at seven furlongs and should have no problem stretching out to 1 1/16 miles. Belgravia is by Mr. Greeley, who is quickly rivaling Grand Slam and Elusive Quality as Gone West's best son at stud. Mr. Greeley is also the sire of Horse Greeley, who won the Del Mar Futurity before an injury sidelined him for the year.

Belgravia is out of the stakes-winning Stalwart mare Peaks Mill. Belgravia is an example of the Rasmussen Factor, or RF (inbreeding to a superior female through different individuals within five generations), a pedigree pattern that appears to be gaining popularity with the abundance of RF high-class stakes winners this year. Belgravia is inbred to Somethingroyal, through her influential sons Secretariat and Sir Gaylord. Charismatic, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner and Horse of the Year, is also inbred to Somethingroyal.

Notional, third in the Hollywood Prevue, is by one of California's leading stallions, In Excess, a strong speed influence. Notional also carries the RF, as both his paternal grandsire, Siberian Express, and his dam, Truly Blessed, descend from the broodmare La Morlaye. While he may have distance limitations regarding next year's Kentucky Derby, he should have no problem at 1 1/16 miles.

Liquidity is by Tiznow, also the sire of undefeated Tiz Wonderful, winner of this year's Kentucky Jockey Club and Iroquois Stakes. Liquidity was third in the Real Quiet Stakes, and comes from a classic female line that produced Derby and Preakness winner and Horse of the Year Alysheba as well as the influential stallion Better Self.

Stormello won the Norfolk Stakes and was third in both the Del Mar Futurity and Best Pal Stakes. By Stormy Atlantic, Stormello may show his best stuff on grass. Out of a mare by speed influence Carson City, his second dam, So Cozy, is a half-sister to Syrian Summer, the dam of Marlin.

Principle Secret won the Best Pal Stakes and was a close second in the Norfolk Stakes at the Hollywood Futurity distance. By the Storm Cat sire Sea of Secrets, he is out of Beright (by stakes-winning sprinter Gray Slewpy), who is an RF as she is inbred to Kerala, the dam of Damascus. Principle Secret should also be as effective on grass as he is on dirt.

Roman Commander won the Real Quiet Stakes at 1 1/16 miles as well as the Barretts Juvenile Stakes. His dam is a full sister to multiple stakes winner Roman Envoy, who was a superior grass miler.

Silent Soul won a maiden race on turf and may be better suited to that surface as he is by Afternoon Deelites, whose offspring enjoy grass. His third dam is a half-sister to Meadowlake and Leo Castelli.

Unusual Suspect was second in the Real Quiet Stakes, second in a division of the Generous Stakes on turf, and third in the Pinjara Stakes on turf. By Nureyev's son Unusual Heat, Unusual Suspect will achieve more success on turf.

Hollywood Starlet

Mistical Plan, third in the Pocahantas Stakes at Churchill Downs, is by the unraced Game Plan, a Phipps-bred stallion by Danzig out of Easy Goer's stakes-winning full sister Cadillacing. Her dam, Mistical Bel, is yet another RF, inbred to Flower Bowl through her two outstanding sons, the full brothers Graustark and His Majesty.

Quick Little Miss is the one to fear. She is by Freud, a full brother to Giant's Causeway who stands in New York. Swift Girl (Unbridled), the dam of Quick Little Miss, was one of the better mares bred to Freud, and the result is a classy filly. Her third dam, What a Summer, was the 1977 champion sprinter. Quick Little Miss won the Barretts Debutante Stakes, was third in the Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes, and won the ungraded Moccasin Stakes.

Runway Rosie won the Sharp Cat Stakes and is from the successful first crop of multiple stakes winner Include. Her fourth dam, Icy Jennifer, is a full sister to the stakes-winning sprinter Don Rickles.

Romance Is Diane won the Cal Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes and is another quick runner by In Excess. Her fourth dam, Pat's Mama, is a half-sister to Star Mommy, the dam of Mom's Command.

A very small amount of offspring earnings separate outstanding freshmen sires Johannesburg and Street Cry, and a victory by Baroness Thatcher could just be enough to keep Johannesburg on top. Baroness Thatcher is from the female family that produced Anees and Elusive Quality.

She's Included, the second filly in the Starlet by Include, was third in the Del Mar Debutante, and her female family is all about speed. Her first dam is by Robyn Dancer, her second dam is by It's Freezing, and her third dam is by Inverness Drive.

Betrluckythangood, third in the Hidden Light Stakes, also has a pedigree slanted toward speed. By the versatile sire More Than Ready, she is out of a Spend a Buck mare and her female line traces to the classy Lea Lark.

Down is by Mr. Greeley and was bred by the late Allaire du Pont, of Kelso fame. She descends from stakes winner and exceptional broodmare Rare Perfume.

Super Freaky is by Smart Strike (the sire of English Channel) and is out of a half-sister to Silver Charm.

Mystic Soul, by Bahri (Riverman), has many grass influences in her pedigree. She has three crosses of Northern Dancer as well as Roberto and is best suited to turf.
